History of the Friesian
The bold majestic Friesian comes from an area of the Netherlands known as Friesland. This is an area rich in agriculture with expansive grasslands. The country is an old one dating back to approximately 500BC, giving the Friesian a long and rich history.
The Friesian horse is a descendent of the equus robustus (meaning large horse). Arabian and Andalusian blood was introduced around the 16th century, which gave the Friesian the beautiful high action for which is sought after. The resulting horse is a very strong, bold steed which has carried many a soldier off to war.
During the 18th century, crossbreeding became very popular. If it weren’t for a group of people that loved this beautiful breed in its pure form, the Friesian may have been lost forever. The Dutch registry is the most strict of all of the Friesian registries and is signified by the initials FPS.
There are a variety of standards, including height and color, that the horses must meet to become a certified Dutch Friesian and entered into the Friesian Studbook. This ensures that only top quality, pure Friesians become certified.
At Feast & Fire, all our Friesians are certified through FPS. They are prized horses, known for their ability both in dressage and carriage driving.
